About This Course
Comprehensive General Pediatrics is a practical resource with direct clinical application taught entirely using questions and quizzes to optimize knowledge retention. And because effective care requires a firm grasp of the basic sciences, you’ll find plenty of that as well.
A love of pediatrics, a commitment to patients, and a desire to have practical answers to parents’ questions motivated the construction of this course. It’s both a privilege and critically important to provide support, information, and insight along the windy, unpredictable road of raising children. Parents need answers and we should have them.
A Practical, Three-Pillar Approach
Newborn Care
From prenatal care to newborn discharge to the first office visit, you’ll move logically through every step of newborn care reviewing common issues, basic anticipatory guidance, and the newborn physical exam.
Well-Child Care
Remember GEEDS, the acronym of well-child care. An underemphasized part of training, preventative care is fundamental to healthy growth and development. Learn to assess the basic indices of wellness and guide parents through the medical & psychosocial issues they’ll face while raising a child.
Acute Care
Organized acute care starts with identifying the chief complaint and building a differential diagnosis. This lecture series is built around the most common pediatric chief complaints with their corresponding ‘evaluation algorithms.’ Pathology review is question based and clinically oriented with tons of basic science integration.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR
David Shafran, MD MA
David Shafran is a pediatrician, educator, writer, and father who identified his educational spirit brother in Dr. Rahul Damania. After chattering for hours about the benefits of integrated, applied education they decided to start HyGuru premised on teaching students to think like physicians while conveying a love for medicine and the human body.
Dr. Shafran also recognizes that it’s an especially challenging time to be a kid as well as a pediatrician and parent. He intends to launch a series of courses to help parents and clinicians navigate the contemporary issues that challenge the well-being and healthy development of children.
In his free time, Dr. Shafran hikes, swims, eats, fishes and sings poorly.

Frequently Asked Questions
What differentiates this course from other pediatric resources?
Two distinctions:
- Highly practical resource with direct application to everyday pediatrics care. ‘How do I structure a well/sick/newborn visit and what do I ask? What are the common issues I’ll encounter?’ This course is you in the exam room with a child across the entire spectrum of their care.
- No dry, lecturey slides. Entirely question and vignette based. To be efficient, I employ specific teaching strategies e.g. active recall, spaced repetition, elaboration, etc. to optimize retention and mastery of the material.
Can I get CME or MOC credit for this course?
Not yet. Working on it.
When can I see the rest of the course?
Soon. It’s ready to go.
What if I have questions about or comments on the course?
Please, please, please write me at pediatrics@hyguru.com. I need this feedback to make this course better.
Was AI used in the creation of this course?
No and emphatically no. I'm not anti-AI but I do believe that there's no shortcut to mastering information especially when stakes are high. Tons of good old-fashioned reading, aggregating, and distilling primary resources went into making this class. I suppose I could have used AI for slide design...but I didn't.
