Newborn Care
From prenatal care to discharge to the first office visit, I’ll take you logically through every step of newborn care. We’ll review common issues, basic anticipatory guidance, and the newborn physical exam as seen from the perspective of the clinician.
Well-Child Care
GEEDS, the acronym of well-child care. An underemphasized part of training, preventative care is critical to healthy growth and development. I’ll teach you how to assess the basic indices of wellness and guide parents through the most critical medical issues they’ll face while raising a child.
Acute Care
It starts with the HPI and identifying the chief complaint. A structured history is the most important part of diagnosis. Then I take you through common chief complaints and how to systematically think about them. You won’t find a single slide that simply lists characteristics of a particular disease. Everything is question based and clinically integrated with tons of basic science integration.
About This Course
I wanted a comprehensive resource that addressed general pediatrics from the perspective of the clinician, a course that offered a practical approach delivered in an engaging way and that optimized knowledge retention. I couldn’t find it out there and so I created this. And because effective care requires a firm grasp of the basic sciences, I included plenty of that as well. Everything is delivered in question-based format because the effort of recalling is how you best remember information.
Underlying this entire endeavor is a love of pediatrics and a commitment to patients. I’m driven by the privilege of partnering with parents along the windy, unpredictable road of raising children. Physiology drives psychology. Physical and mental health are foundational to children achieving their dreams. What started as a mission to have answers for my patients resulted in this course. Securing our tomorrow begins- at least in part- with what you, the clinician, know today.

David Shafram, MD
David Shafran is a pediatrician, educator and father in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Shafran identified his educational spirit brother when he happened upon a young first year pediatrics resident named Rahul. During that first fortuitous meeting Dr. Rahul Damania and Dr. Shafran chattered for hours about the benefits of integrated, applied education, lectures that both prepare students for tests but also teach them to think like physicians and begin to appreciate the elegant interdependence of the human body. That's how Dr. Shafran lectures and he was ecstatic to learn that Dr. Damania subscribed to the same philosophy and had already employed it in a full USMLE Step I course.
Dr. Shafran is the author of the HyGuru Blog, his goal, to keep students mindful of the transformation that's occurring as they evolve into conscientious, proficient physicians.
